13th Annual Special Olympics Hometown Soccer Tournament

Today, we are hosting the 13th annual Special Olympics Hometown Soccer Tournament, organized by the SS12 Leadership Class. This tournament, in partnership with Special Olympics Ontario, brings participants from Oakville, London, Brampton, St. Catherines, Burlington, Welland, Milton and Mississauga. More than 300 athletes, families and volunteers are participating.

Karen Hansen, Head of Senior School, remarks, "SMLS has hosted the Special Olympics event for the past 13 years and it is always incredible to see how involved and excited our Millies get about cheering on the Special Olympics athletes. The event provides our students with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and to learn about the needs of others in our community. SMLS is proud to be part of this event!"

Graduating students Abigail Hutchens and Tess Buckley have helped with the tournament in many ways over the years. Abigail reflects, "I have volunteered for Special Olympics for six years now and it is the school event I look forward to most. The athletes radiate a positive, optimistic energy and I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to be a part of such an amazing initiative." Tess explains, "all of the leadership opportunities at SMLS help students to feel confident organizing an event or leading an initiative. This event is my favourite. It is very hands-on and you get to know the athletes really well. I will miss it."

Pratima Bhatt of Special Olympics Ontario wrote to us recently, saying, "SMLS is a Special Olympics partner that continues to make a difference in many people’s lives. The students and staff at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School should be very proud of their success! We treasure your support and truly value your partnership. Special Olympics athletes look forward to this tournament year after year!"
