Grade 12 Student Khushi Earns Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award
Khushi A. has reached an extraordinary milestone, earning the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold Award—an accomplishment that reflects years of dedication, resilience, and personal growth. Her achievement was recently celebrated at Appleby College, where she was recognized alongside fellow recipients and honoured in the presence of the Oakville Mayor.
The celebration at Appleby College brought together students from both SMLS and Appleby College, Duke of Edinburgh Award Leaders, and family to recognize the remarkable efforts of award recipients. The presence of the Mayor underscored the significance of the achievement—not only as a personal milestone, but as a contribution to the broader community.
The Gold Award, the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program, challenges students to push beyond their comfort zones through four key components: community service, skill development, physical recreation, and an adventurous journey. Participants must also complete a significant independent project, demonstrating leadership and initiative. For Khushi, the journey required sustained commitment over multiple years—balancing academics, extracurriculars, and personal responsibilities while steadily working toward her goal.
During the event, Khushi spoke about her experience with the Award and how it impacted her life, sharing that "Throughout this journey, the Award has challenged me to grow in ways I never expected. One of the most rewarding parts for me was developing my passions. Through karate, I progressed significantly, from earning my black belt by pushing through intense training and a 4 hour grading, to becoming a two-time world top ten athlete.
Another important part of my journey was giving back to my community. I dedicated my service hours to teaching younger students karate. What started as something intimidating, especially as someone who is naturally introverted, became one of the most rewarding experiences. It not only allowed me to share my passion but also helped me grow into a leader."
As Khushi prepares to graduate, her accomplishment stands as a testament to the power of sustained effort and purpose-driven action. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award is more than a milestone—it is a foundation for lifelong leadership, and we could not be more proud of Khushi.
