SMLS Flags Lowered in Memory of Kamloops Residential School Victims
Dear SMLS Community,
Like many of you, I was devastated to learn of the remains of 215 children found at the site of a former residential school for Indigenous children in British Columbia. We grieve alongside the Indigenous members in our community and across our nation.
St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School joins in honouring the 215 children whose lives were tragically lost at the former Kamloops residential school, the survivors and their families. This is a horrific and sobering reminder of the history we must keep alive in our classrooms and in our hearts – so that we never forget the suffering and devastation that the First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have endured. As a symbol of our collective grief, the SMLS flags are being lowered to half-mast for this week.
As a school community, we pray for the souls of the 215 young lives that were taken from their families and taken from our world. We pray for truth, reconciliation and healing.
