SMLS Teacher attends United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

Alicia Armstrong, Middle School language arts and social studies teacher, has been spending her March Break attending events and panel discussions about the empowerment of women through economics. Alicia was selected as a representative of the Anglican Church of Canada.

She had the opportunity to meet Canadian Minister on the Status of Women,  Maryam Monsef, and spoke with her about the importance of education in empowering girls, including how single-sex programs can focus on empowering girls through STEM training.

Alicia also attended a forum gathering of NGOs from around the world that focus on the protection, education and empowerment of women. This included a panel discussion led by the UN Executive Director for Women and the Ambassador to Brazil who served as the Chair of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Alicia will bring exciting learning back to SMLS to share with her colleagues.
