School Life

Athletics

SMLS Spartan Teams are composed of students in our competitive athletic program, that are involved in both the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA) and Private Schools’ Athletic Association (PSAA). At SMLS, our Spartans compete in Fall, Winter and Spring leagues.

At the Under 10 (U10) to Under 14 (U14) level, teams participate in practices and at one-day tournaments organized through the PSAA. Students from Under 10 (U10) to Under 20 (U20 - Senior) also have the opportunity to compete within the CISAA league. Through this association, they are able to compete in league play, CISAA Championship Games, CAIS National tournaments, and have the possibility of qualifying for provincial high school championships (OFSAA).

Our proud record of athletic accomplishments is a testament to our energetic and dedicated mentors and coaches, and the enthusiasm and pride of our Spartan athletes.

SMLS ATHLETIC COUNCIL
Students in the Senior School also have the opportunity to run for Athletic Council. This group of students works to lead programs that support our Spartans and the Athletic Department in their athletic endeavours.

Active Healthy Living

As part of our Active Healthy Living initiative, introduced in 2017, several initiatives were implemented to provide girls with more opportunities for physical activity, including more choice, more individual activities and more sports teams. To date, these include expanding the number of sports teams available to girls, bringing in professional coaches for several teams, building partnerships with community fitness programs and introducing Wellness Wednesdays.

Wellness Wednesdays for all SMLS Girls
Every Wednesday is Wellness Wednesday at SMLS and girls and staff wear athletic gear all day -- a very popular addition to the uniform guidelines! In the Senior and Middle Schools, there are both active and academic sessions throughout the year where girls choose to try out for a sports team or sign up for another wellness option or programming. Every girl is required to be participate during Wednesday Programming from 2:40pm - 3:40pm in Middle and Senior School. Fitness options include:

Power Yoga and Hot Yoga
- Small and Large Group Fitness Bootcamps
- Spartan Run/Walk Club
- Martial Arts
- PSAA and CISAA Sports Team (Fall, Winter and Spring)

Junior School girls participate in special Wednesday activities, such as Wilderness Wednesdays, that incorporate physical and experiential learning with an overall theme of fostering mind, body and spirit.
