The SMLS Advantage: Why Finding Her Voice in Middle School is Crucial

Carol Steven, Middle School Principal
At SMLS, the Middle School years are intentionally designed for transformation. They bridge childhood and adolescence, from dependence to agency, from guided learning to self-directed growth. Every component of our program supports girls in discovering who they are as learners, leaders, and global citizens.
Through student leadership during parent teacher conferences, girls learn to speak with clarity about their strengths and next steps, taking ownership of their goals and progress and asking questions that connect to their interests and the world around them.

Beyond the classroom, our students learn to take risks in a supportive environment. With 100% participation in co-curricular activities, from robotics to athletics and visual art to drama, they are encouraged to try something new, to stumble, to improve, and to succeed. Each new challenge strengthens confidence and resilience, helping girls recognize that their voice doesn’t have to be perfect, it simply has to be their own.

Relationships are the heart of this journey. Our teachers know every student by name and story, fostering relationships built on trust, belonging, and encouragement. Within our dynamic community of three schools, Middle School students are mentors of Junior students and inspired by Senior role models, ensuring that every girl feels part of something larger than herself.

When a student enters Senior School already comfortable in her own voice, she is ready to lead with purpose. She can advocate for herself and others, engage thoughtfully in dialogue, and approach challenges with both confidence and compassion. She becomes the kind of learner and leader who not only succeeds academically but also contributes meaningfully to her community and to the world.

That is why every girl deserves the chance to find her voice in Middle School…because once she does, she will use it to challenge and transform the world.
