Dear SMLS Community,
I am delighted to take on the role as the new Chair of the SMLS Board of Governors and I’d like to welcome you all to a new academic year at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School. This is the time of year where we say goodbye to retiring Board of Governors members, and welcome new members. Caroline Hogwood (previous Chair) and Doug Jenkins (also a previous Chair) are both retiring. I want to personally thank them for their many years of service and dedication to SMLS. To fill those vacancies, we are pleased to welcome Claire Gillies and Maggie Zhu to the Board of Governors. Both offer a tremendous wealth of diverse experience and we are extremely happy to have them join the SMLS Board of Governors.
While we continue to navigate school life amidst the global pandemic, it is encouraging to see the students, faculty and staff back in the classrooms. The Board of Governors is extremely proud of the leadership and dedication that the entire SMLS community has demonstrated in ensuring students health and safety while also prioritizing community connection and high-quality education.
The year ahead holds great promise - not just for our Millies who will grow and develop in ways beyond measure - but also for our entire school community as, together, we will embark on an exciting strategic planning journey charting out the long-term vision and priorities for the school and setting out the roadmap to get us there. This process will provide all members of the SMLS community an opportunity to provide input and have a say in the future of the school. I encourage everyone to be part of this exciting process. You will be hearing more about this project, and how to provide input, in the coming months.
In all that we undertake this year, our purpose will centre around the students and our strong goal will be to listen to the voice of our community. St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School is a very special place - one that has served my own daughters well over the years and one that I am proud to govern - and I look forward to seeing how the school will continue to deliver on its promise to develop courageous girls who can - and will - challenge and change the world.
It is a true pleasure to be a part of our wonderful SMLS community. I am deeply grateful to the students, parents, faculty, staff and alumnae who continue, despite the most challenging of times, to come together as a source of strength, support and connection for one another and for the future of school.
Chair, SMLS Board of Governors
