What We Do

We are fortunate at SMLS to have a significant number of parent volunteers who make the Parent Association (PA) successful. The PA coordinates volunteers for the in-class activities as well as PA functions, always ensuring and maintaining the currency of volunteer police checks. Our communications network throughout the school starts with Class Moms in the Junior School and includes Senior Contact Persons, one for each Senior Grade.

The funds the PA raises through our activities are used for a variety of purposes. The Junior School and Senior School Heads, Mrs. Byers and Mrs. McCrae, have been the recipients of cheques this year and last which they have been spending very wisely on items such as media equipment and events such as Soc Doc. Throughout the year, the funds are put toward more immediate requests such as team travel assistance, security at dances and FIRST LEGO® and Robotics League expenses as well as sponsorship for the Special Olympics hosted by SMLS.

In order to raise the money, the PA sells gift wrap, magazine subscriptions, Christmas wreaths, items of clothing bearing the SMLS crest and more. We run a Pizza Day and a Sub Day in the Junior School. Each year new ideas are introduced to add variety to what we offer. We also hold events such as our Traditions of Christmas fair, as well as a Chapters Book Fair, Ladies Latin Dance Night, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, Father and Daughter Bingo, Ladies' Golf Day and the Used Uniform Sale.

The Made for Millies Store is run by the PA. It is a vibrant part of the school, selling gym uniforms as well as other items of clothing and SMLS crested gifts. For the latest opening hours, check the website or call 905-845-2386.

Our major event every other year is a Gala dinner dance. In 2009 the Millies' Ball was held on May 1, 2009 at the Palais Royale, Toronto. It was an amazing success, raising over $250,000. All the funds from the Millies' Ball have gone to the School's capital campaign. Our next gala will be in 2010.

Our connection with other Interguild School Parent Associations and Guilds means that we are able to keep abreast of issues and trends arising in independent schools. This enables us to stay relevant and take advantage of the networking opportunities provided by Interguild.

Our email address at pa@smls.on.ca is available for your comments and non-urgent PA-related matters.
