Athletes of the Month for March

Congratulations to three of our outstanding senior athletes who will be graduating in June. For the month of March, we proudly recognize Makenzi M., Monica K. and Alex S.. Read more about their athletic accomplishments below.
Alex S. - Grad Year:
1.     What Sports / Activities do you participate in at SMLS / outside of school?

At school, I am on the U20 basketball and volleyball teams. Outside of school, I used to play tennis competitively and ski race, but I am now a ski racing coach and I participate in recreational volleyball and tennis.

2.    Why do you LOVE being physically active?
I love the competitive atmosphere that sport provides, allowing you to push yourself to achieve goals. I also love the team environments that many sports provide. Through my involvement in a variety of teams, I have gotten to know teammates very well, and love the effect that a close team has on the season.
I also love the ability to put aside other work and responsibilities, or anything else on my mind, and simply participate in a fun activity.

3.    What have been your BIG accomplishments this year?
Our school volleyball team did very well this year: we were 2 points away from the finals to qualify for OFSAA, and placed 3rd in the league. I was the libero for the team, which was a big accomplishment for me, as I was not previously confident in my volleyball abilities. Through this position, I gained so much confidence in my passing skills!
I also coached a great team of seven-year-old girls in ski racing, and it was a great accomplishment to watch them improve throughout the year. At the club championships, 3 of my girls placed in the top 5!

4.    What does being "Athlete of the Month" mean to you?
I believe that the athletes of the month are always so motivated and so empowering, so I am honoured to be recognized as an athlete of the month! It’s great that my efforts within and dedication to school teams has been recognized.

5.    What is your favourite sport? Why?
My favourite sport is skiing! I love the feeling when you’re edging like crazy and going really fast down the hill – it’s unlike any other!

6.    Do you have an athlete that you admire or a role model?
Eugenie Bouchard is my role model. She set a record for Canada at Wimbledon in 2014, and is an amazing tennis player!
