The St. Mildred's Women Advancing Technology (S.W.A.T.) FIRST Robotics team has a lot to celebrate. It's been another successful year for the team and their robot - Mildread IX.

"We are very proud of the accomplishments of the whole team," noted team member Karen Lee, adding that this year's robot was more competitive and capable, with the ability to successfully climb the bumps, score balls and hang from a seven foot tall tower at the end of a match.

FIRST is a not-for-profit organization that aspires to make science, math, engineering and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway Human Transporter, FIRST operates robot competitions for high school and elementary students. St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School students have participated in the program since 2000.

The 2009-2010 S.W.A.T. team competed at the Waterloo and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) regional finals with impressive results. While in Waterloo the team won their first award - the Xerox Creativity Award - which celebrates creative design and innovative use of materials. At the GTA finals 50 teams competed at the Hershey Centre with S.W.A.T placing 19th.

Thanks to the support of nine corporate, parent and faculty mentors and sponsorship from Ford, Hatch, Microsoft, The Society of Professional Engineers-Oakville Chapter, Whole Foods and the SMLS Parent Association, S.W.A.T. has many reasons to celebrate another winning year.

Paul Saltzman Visits

Posted: March 12, 2010 | Category: Events

The students at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School welcomed Canadian filmmaker and Director Paul Saltzman to the School as part of activities supporting Black History Month in February.

Saltzman is well-known for his work as the Director of the film "Prom Night in Mississippi". The film follows students, teachers and parents in the lead up to Charleston High School's first-ever integrated prom.

The prom, which was paid for by Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman under the condition it be racially integrated, made history in 2008. Despite fully integrated classrooms at Charleston High School for decades the integration of the prom created racial tension in the Delta town.

The appearance by Paul Saltzman highlighted a month-long series of activities organized by SMLS students, including discussion groups, food samplings, and art classes. Fundraisers (hair braiding and bake sale events) also raised money for the Watoto Children's Choir of Africa.

Juniors Win Silver

Posted: March 12, 2010 | Category: Events

The SMLS Junior Girls Volleyball team brought home Canadian Independent School (CIS) Silver after a close round of play at the finals held the last weekend in February. The girls fought hard right until the end finishing their season with 6 wins, and 1 loss - the team's best in recent years.

"Our girls did a great job," noted Carly McClements, who with co-coach Chris Turner indicated that the girls played amazingly and fought right until the end.

Every set was close. Every point was won after a long rally, with spectators at the edge of their seats watching the match against Bayview Glen School. Congratulations to the SMLS Juniors who persevered until the end winning the Silver in the best of 5 set final game.

Algonquin Adventure

Posted: March 12, 2010 | Category: Events

Spirit Point Wilderness Academy was the destination for SMLS' S2 (Grade 9) students in February, as part of their 'near adventure' experience for the Junior Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Students learned winter survival skills, including shelter and fire building and took part in snow sports, which included zip lining and skating on the frozen lake. Throughout the three days of activities students learned team building and leadership skills. Important components that support Duke award goals.

Among the highlights of the annual trip to Algonquin Park were a candle lit evening hike across the lake, complete with camp songs and jokes. The consensus from the participants was that no one activity was favoured, and that everything was enjoyed by all.

Oakville Teenagers in Action will continue to fundraise using other events to bring them closer to the construction of the Sierra Leone school.

Alumna Receives Order of Ontario

Posted: March 12, 2010 | Category: Events

Congratulations to Janet Stewart who was appointed the 2009 Order of Ontario, the province's highest honour recognizing outstanding contributions to society in Ontario and around the world.

Stewart, a graduate from SMLS in 1960 and a member of the School's Legacy Society of donors, resides in London. She is a lawyer who advocates for the advancement of women in the law and is known for her compassion and commitment to philanthropic activities in the London area. She joins a group of 27 individuals who were bestowed the Order of Ontario by the Honourable David C. Onley, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, at a ceremony in January.

"I thrived in the environment of an all girls' school and this has benefited me throughout my professional and personal life" Stewart once shared with SMLS staff, adding that she knew "there are girls who will benefit from a SMLS education who cannot afford it without financial help." For this reason Janet Stewart demonstrated the type of philanthropic commitment that has earned her an Order of Ontario, by making a donation to the School's Legacy Society

Submission Deadline Feb. 28th

Submissions for PhotoSensitive's Cancer Connections project continue to be accepted as the February 28th deadline nears. The project, which St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School spearheaded amongst all independent and private schools across Canada, features photographs that will help to raise awareness and foster sensitivity to those affected by cancer and the people close to them. All photos appear on the project's website, with a selection chosen as part of the exhibit which continues to tour nationally. The next show will take place in Vancouver, in April.

To date over 140 students and 13 independent/private schools have joined the list of participants. St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School (SMLS) students have contributed 32 photos, with one submission by Maddie Goodall accepted for the national tour.

Karen Dyne, the Head of Art and Otino Corsano, the Visual Arts and New Media teacher at SMLS, were both keen for SMLS students to get involved in the project and to help encourage other schools to participate. Corsano has been working closely with SMLS students through a Communication Technology class offered at the school. The response has been positive.

"PhotoSensitive's imagery appealed to the students. They became excited about being a part of it," noted Dyne. "They also felt empowered by the chance to show their work alongside professional photographer's photos. They have been asked to say something and get their messages out there."

Dyne also noted that student involvement in the project has also opened their eyes to the realities of the disease. Students have not restricted their involvement to still photos. A YouTube video is currently being produced by SMLS students to help promote the project.

To find out more about PhotoSensitive and the Cancer Connections photo exhibit please contact Jackie Osmond Patrick at 905-282-9074, Jackie@photosensitive.com. Autumn Artwork at Seasons

Posted: November 24, 2009 | Category: Event

Autumn returns to Seasons Restaurant (Downtown Oakville) in an art display prepared by SMLS students. Diners at Seasons will be able to enjoy student artwork showcased on the walls of the restaurant from November 1st to 15th.

Junior School Art teacher Ann Westell noted that "Students in grades 3 -6 have enjoyed a visual exploration of our Canadian harvest time. This selection of artwork reflects their understanding of life on a farm and the role our local markets play in supporting our farmers."

School supporters and restaurant owners Tammy and George Couto welcomed the opportunity to once again showcase the student artwork, which was a popular attraction when displayed last year. Their restaurant, located at 134 Lakeshore Road West, offers the ideal setting for this type of display.

"It is important in the development of young artists to have a public venue to show their artwork," noted SMLS Head of Art Karen Dyne. "We are very pleased to be displaying student work at Seasons Restaurant again and hope this will become an annual event."

Maddie Goodal

At St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, learning goes beyond the classroom. For Grade 12 student Maddie Goodall, her love of photography has become an incredible learning experience that is bringing her national attention.

Goodall is just one St. Mildred's student who joined the PhotoSensitive Cancer Connections exhibition, which features photographs that will help to raise awareness and foster sensitivity to those affected by cancer and the people close to them. St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School (SMLS) is promoting student participation in the project amongst all independent and private schools across Canada. See the "Photos Connect with Cancer" story, featured below, in the News and Events section.

All photo submissions are featured at PhotoSensitive's online gallery at www.photosensitive.com/cc. Maddie Goodall submitted six photos and one has been chosen to appear with a select number of photos in a travelling exhibition in Vancouver, Calgary and the Grande Finale Show in Ottawa in 2010.

"Through the one-month work study program offered at St. Mildred's, I had the opportunity to work in the area of study I'm hoping to pursue in university," noted Goodall. "Working with Cancer Connections gave me the chance to gain valuable experience while participating in a very worthwhile project."

For Maddie Goodall, a love of photography and the support of SMLS faculty helped to bring her skills national attention. SMLS encourages all students to share this experience by participating in the project.
