FIRST LEGO® League
On December 9, 2006 - Ontario students and their robots explored the tiny but vast world of nanotechnology at the Provincial Championships here at SMLS!
SMLS offers FIRST LEGO® League (FLL), the "little league" of robotics - in Grade 6. With the help of LEGO® robotics technology, they work as a team to build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST robotics event.
When the SMLS FIRST Robotics team competed at the international championships in 2001, we witnessed the excitement of FLL and knew that our little Millies would enjoy the fun and learning of creating and programming a robot. In 2002, our first group of Grade 6 girls became a FLL team. Mentored by senior robotics team members, teachers and parents, they competed at the Halton Regional and Ontario Tournaments with great success.
In 2003, SMLS welcomed eight teams from local schools for a FLL tournament, then in 2004, we hosted the Halton Regional Tournament, in which 12 teams and more than 350 students took part from as far away as Corbeil (near North Bay), Kingston and St. Catharines.
The SMLS FLL team continues to learn and have fun. Team members enjoy the opportunity to interact with senior girls, who also find great enjoyment teaching and mentoring young Millies. Our Enhanced Learning Centre (ELC) provides a dynamic space for these activities.
