Global Studies Program
Learning Happens Everywhere
A new development in the Junior School is the start of the journey in Global Studies.
This year we are planning the first 'experiential day' for Grade 3 students on October 31st and Grade 4 students on November 28th.
Also new this year is The Learn to Lead program from World Challenge that was presented to all Grade 5 girls. It included a one day adventurous journey to Bronte Creek Provincial Park on September 26th, and is a wonderful program for recognizing outstanding leadership, teamwork, taking responsibility and showing initiative, caring for the planet and developing 'campcraft' skills.
For our Grade 6 students, we will be in our third year of the Junior Duke Program, which focuses on service, skills, physical fitness and adventure. The 'near' adventure will focus on water (for the first time) and will develop water survival skills, teach the basics of 'journeying' in a war canoe and build team spirit and camaraderie.
In December our Grade 6 girls will also participate in our 'experiential' day, and then in late spring will embark on their 'far' adventure to Ottawa!
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program is an essential feature of Global Studies that encourages perseverance, self-reliance, and community service. SMLS students must complete the requirements for the Bronze level, and are encouraged to continue on to the Silver and Gold levels, which a record number of students are choosing to achieve.
This award program encourages and motivates youth in a variety of personal development activities - including community service, physical recreation, skill and adventurous journey - all designed to advance the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the whole person.

The School's regional membership in the international Round Square program has also been integrated into Global Studies. As a Round Square school, we foster and develop the IDEALS (internationalism, democracy, environmental awareness and action, adventure, leadership, service). For students in the Junior School we offer the Young Round Square Program (Grade 6-S2). Visit www.roundsquare.org for more information. |
