Scholarships and Bursaries
St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School places a high priority on the attraction and retention of talented students. Each year Scholarships and Bursaries are awarded to deserving students to recognize excellence and to offer the opportunity of a SMLS education to those who require financial aid.
A donation directed to the Scholarship or Bursary Endowment Fund is a wonderful way to establish a legacy that will have an impact on students for years to come. The principal of this Endowment Fund - currently totalling $1,065,132 as of June 30, 2011 - remains intact and only the interest is disbursed annually for Scholarships and Bursaries. The SMLS Endowment Fund is overseen by the SMLS Board of Governors.
A Named Scholarship or Bursary can be established with a donation of $25,000. We appreciate the generosity of the following donors who have chosen to establish a Named Fund:

Scholarships
Submission Deadline: Annually on April 15th
Distribution: Annually in June
Scholarships are designed to recognize and reward all-around proficiency including academics, co-curricular involvement and community service. Each scholarship is awarded for one year and the names of recipients are announced in June.
Through the generosity of charitable donations earmarked towards the School’s Endowment Fund, $30,564 in Scholarships was awarded to twenty deserving students in June 2011.
Applications for scholarships are available through the Admissions Office and should be submitted to Mrs. Cossitt by April 15th, each year for students entering the following levels:

The following are the list of requirements for all students interested in being considered for a scholarship:
- Write an essay of no more than 500 words;
- Obtain two evaluation forms completed by current teachers
- Provide two letters of recommendation from a member of the community (no family members)
- Provide a personal resume
- Provide a copy of her most recent report card
Applications are evaluated by a Scholarship Committee and short-listed applicants may be interviewed by members of the Committee as part of the selection process.

Bursaries
Submission deadline: Annually on February 15th
Distribution: Annually
Donations to the Bursary program are held in the SMLS Endowment Fund. Applications for bursaries are made through the Admissions Office and must normally be submitted by February 15th, each year.
Applications are reviewed by the Bursary Committee, which distributes awards as broadly as possible to the most deserving students. The School holds this information in strictest confidence and families are asked to do the same.
Families who are awarded a Bursary carry no obligations for repayment. To support girls in their 2011-2012 academic year, Bursaries totaling $240,792 were awarded to thirty-four deserving students.
Students awarded both a scholarship and a bursary will receive the scholarship and the balance (if any) of the bursary award.
How to Apply for Financial Aid
In order to apply for a bursary an Apple Financial Services application form must be completed annually. Apple Financial will review the application and provide a report on eligibility to the School’s Bursary Committee. The cost to the family for this assessment is $75.00 and is payable directly to Apple Financial.
Applications for bursaries are available online through the Apple Financial Website and must be submitted by February 15th for the following academic year.
The Bursary Committee distributes awards as broadly as possible to the most deserving students. The School holds this information in strictest confidence and families are asked to do the same.
