Testimonials

Members of our SMLS community share their sentiments about our wonderful school:

'The teachers.' That is my automatic response when asked, 'Why St. Mildred's?' I would challenge any school to assemble a teaching staff with more passion, professionalism, and genuine care for their students than that which St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School has established; I don't think it could be done.

Student in McGill's Arts Program
I never thought about not being able to do something because I was a girl. It was never an issue at the School, so it never entered into my awareness.
Dr. Lauren (Tribe) Briens, Class of '87
Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario
The Olympic journey and the SMLS journey have much in common. To be successful, it takes hard work and perseverance, the belief that anything is possible and mentoring and guidance from exceptional coaches and teachers.

For us, the teachers, staff and programs at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School make it an environment of educational excellence in every sense of the meaning. SMLS provides so many opportunities for our girls to learn and grow; it is a nurturing environment where they are thriving and where they are challenged in unique and innovative ways using state-of-the-art technology to enhance their learning experience. They are truly excited to head to school every morning.

I spent 14 years of my life at SMLS and loved every minute of it. While I wasn't always at the top of my class academically, my teachers always strove to bring out my strengths and build up my self-confidence. I believe that my experience at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School shaped me in countless positive ways. In my career as an elementary teacher, I feel that the preparation I received as a student at SMLS was integral in making me an effective educator; enforcing the importance of the whole child, the meaning of community, and the value of hard work.
Jennifer (Harrison) Edmison, Class of '94
Elementary Teacher
SMLS encouraged me to be a spiritual (and spirited!) individual with lifelong possibilities and talents. The School also showed me that fashion statements begin and end with a navy blue tunic, knee high socks and a tie! As a three time Ironman athlete with over 140 marathons and triathlons to my credit, being a woman in sport and recreational programming has never been more empowering and satisfying!
Fyonna (Brooman) Vanderwerf, B.A, B.Sc, Class of '89
Fitness/Climbing Programmer, Town of Bracebridge Culture and Recreation Department
If we can start our children off in a fabulous environment and get them excited about learning, it will prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead. After all, we are making an investment to send our girls to one of the best schools in Canada. Why wouldn't we do whatever we can to ensure it has the best possible facilities?

Being in a girls' school helps young ladies focus on themselves and their education, as opposed to other things. Boys and girls have different ways of learning. It's important to recognize that and put them in the best place possible. Making the decision to support the Building Her Future Campaign wasn't difficult. We've been very blessed and we recognize that there is a responsibility of privilege. We want to give back to those who have helped us, and also to help other people who may not be able to afford some of the things we have.

SMLS provided me with the confidence to structure my ideas and share them with others. Small classes and high levels of teacher interaction prepared me well for University courses with participation grades, corporate interviews and executive presentations. I now balance a family with small children and my career with the same confidence. Thank you to all my teachers at SMLS for treating me as an individual as I transformed from child to young adult. SMLS is a great place to grow.
